When a digital star map wins
A digital file is the better call more often than people expect:
- You need it today — a birthday you forgot, a last-minute anniversary.
- You want an unusual size, or to match a frame you already own.
- You are on a budget: no shipping, and you reprint for free forever.
- You are outside the US and shipping a poster would be slow or expensive.
When a printed poster wins
Ordering a physical print makes sense when:
- You never want to touch a printer or visit a print shop.
- You want it to arrive already framed, ready to hand over.
- You are gifting to someone who would not print it themselves.
How to print a digital star map (and get it right)
Take the file to any print shop or online service — Walgreens, CVS, Staples, Mpix or Printique all work. Matte or thick photo paper looks best for a night sky.
StarMap files are 1:1.22, very close to the standard 4:5 frame (8×10, 16×20, 24×30 in), so trimming is minimal. Use the HD file up to about 12×15 in, and the 4K file for anything larger.
The one thing both should get right: real astronomy
Digital or printed, a star map is only special if it is the real sky of your date — not a decorative template reused for every order. Many services just print your text over the same starfield.
